Jones and the Zac Brown Band performed at the UFC Freedom 250 – but why is an insult against Michelle Obama driving a wedge between the billionaire heiress and her family?

US president Donald Trump hosted the UFC Freedom 250, a mixed martial arts event, at the White House on June 14. The night prior, country group Zac Brown Band performed to kick off the event. Hedge fund billionaire Paul Tudor Jones’ daughter, musician and band member Caroline Jones, sang the national anthem.

At the event, mixed martial artist Josh Hokit achieved the biggest win of his MMA career thus far against Derrick Lewis. During his celebration, Hokit unexpectedly shouted into the microphone, “And lastly, Michelle Obama is a man, am I right America?” The disparaging statement prompted shouts from the live audience and criticism on social media, overshadowing the heavyweight’s win. Hokit later attempted to defend his statement by claiming it was actually a compliment, and commenting on the US’ freedom of speech.

Caroline Jones – born June 30, 1990, in New York City to billionaire father Paul Tudor Jones and mother Sonia Klein – has been studying music since she was a kid. She listened to pop, rock and R&B, learning how to sing at the age of nine and writing her first song at 10. Jones is a multi-instrumentalist, being well-versed in guitar, piano, harmonica, banjo, mandolin and Dobro. Growing up with classical music and opera, Jones was unfamiliar with country music for most of her adolescence before discovering the genre at age 17, when she watched an acoustic show in Nashville.

She attended New York University, where she studied creative writing. After graduating, she wrote and produced her own music, releasing her debut album Fallen Flower in 2011.
