The designer enjoyed Adrien Brody vehicle The Brutalist, and says he never goes anywhere without the protection of a beloved Bhutanese pendant – but who is his timeless style icon?

Founded by Malaysian designer Han Chong in 2013, Self-Portrait started out as a maker of well-made, photogenic and affordable lace dresses. Since then, the brand has successfully expanded into categories such as jewellery and handbags, and has unveiled collections in collaboration with designers such as Christopher Kane. Chong, who is based in London and has dressed celebrities such as Kate Middleton and Selena Gomez, often travels to Asia, including his hometown of Penang. Here he shares his favourite finds.

I just watched The Brutalist. It’s beautifully intense and visually striking. It tackles heavy themes like immigration and addiction with such depth, and the performances from Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce are incredible. A true cinematic experience.

Sulwhasoo’s SPF 50+ is my go-to. It’s lightweight, absorbs beautifully, and gives that extra layer of protection without feeling heavy.
