Brunello, Il Visionario Garbato (Brunello: The Gracious Visionary), a film about the life and vision of Italian designer Brunello Cucinelli, premiered in Rome last night.

Known as the King of Cashmere, Cucinelli established his eponymous label in 1978 and has since built a luxury empire based in his hometown of Solomeo, in the Umbria region of Italy.

A firm believer in what he calls “humanistic capitalism”, Cucinelli has become a sort of philosopher in the luxury industry. He’s always made it a priority to support his native land and Italian craftsmanship, and through philanthropic initiatives that have turned Solomeo into an idyllic hamlet. A-listers ranging from Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to Jeff Bezos have visited Cucinelli there.

Directed by Oscar winner Giuseppe Tornatore, the documentary features re-enactments to showcase Cucinelli’s childhood and early days as a striving entrepreneur and designer. Another Oscar winner, Nicola Piovani, composed the soundtrack of the movie, which is out in Italy this month before being released in the US and the rest of the world next year.

In a speech before the screening, Cucinelli referred to Tornatore and Piovani as “poets”. “Poets are the first great people in humankind,” he said. “With this work, these two were able to truly enter my mind. With this film we wanted to combine knowledge, equality and harmony – the qualities [that make] a great human being.”
