Apple designer Jony Ive and Marc Newson’s all-diamond ring netted US$256,250 before it even existed – now we know what it looks like

One of a kind: Jony Ive and Marc Newson’s masterpiece is made entirely from diamond.

When news first broke that outgoing Apple designer John Ive – responsible for iconic designs from the iMac to the iPhone – was coupling with revered industrial designer Marc Newson to craft a bespoke ring entirely made of diamond, it caused an understandable stir.

The one-off masterpiece was auctioned off for charity through Sotheby’s in December 2018 – long before the custom-made piece was even near complete.

A total of US$256,250 was raised from an anonymous buyer towards Red HIV/Aids programmes in Africa and Chicago.

Now for the first time it is clear that the ring – understood to have been crafted to fit the buyer’s finger-size – finally exists, with the first photo revealed to the public.

Created alongside Diamond Foundry, the finished ring reflects the blueprint, with 2,000 to 3,000 facets – never before seen on a single piece.

“This is more than just a ring,” said Red chief operating officer Jennifer Lotito. “It’s a thing of absolute beauty and sustainability which is going to save lives. We’re so grateful to Jony, Marc and Diamond Foundry for delivering exquisite design and craft to help end Aids.”
