Tencent Holdings chairman and CEO Pony Ma Huateng is the wealthiest person in China with an estimated net worth of US$44.9 billion, according to CEOWORLD magazine’s rich list index for 2020. Alibaba founder Jack Ma takes second spot with a net worth of US$44.7 billion. (Alibaba owns South China Morning Post.)

Hui Ka-yan, chairman and the largest shareholder of real estate developer Evergrande, is third with a net worth of US$35.5 billion. According to the financial publication, the total wealth of the 10 richest people in China hit a record high of US$266.3 billion. The top 10 account for 1.88 per cent of China’s GDP.

Yang Huiyan, vice-chairman of Chinese property developer Country Garden Holdings, and He Xiangjian, founder of home appliance-maker Midea Group, complete the five wealthiest people in China with US$27.4 billion and US$26 billion, respectively.

This list encompasses family fortunes, including those shared among extended families of multiple generations. The minimum to make the list was US$1 billion.
