It almost feels like every time we visit Canggu, there’s a new hipster cafe or restaurant in the neighbourhood. So how to single out the best in the sea of abundance? We sought recommendations from Jessica Lee Cook from Q Events Bali, Elissa Doyle from Bali Tours And More, and our own Mirko Corbella, general manager of The Luxe Nomad Bali.

1. Crate

Crate isn’t new, but since it can be considered one of the pioneers of hipster cafe culture in Bali, the name (and food!) has stuck with both regulars and newcomers to Canggu. The cafe also doubles as an art gallery, providing a space for artists to network and showcase their work. There’s also a boutique store selling local designer labels.

What to order: bacon and egg waffles with maple syrup (the perfect hangover food!).

Find it here: Jalan Canggu Padang Linjong, Canggu, Bali. Tel: +62 812-3894-3040. Open daily 6am-5pm.

2. Milk & Madu

Family-friendly cafes are pretty common in Bali, but Milk & Madu has a cool play area and we suspect the staff were probably hired based on their love of children (truly, everyone in Bali seems to love babies). Plus, the food is good, so even the adults have a good time.

What to order: the madu from the breakfast menu (poached eggs, avo, bacon, relish and hollandaise).

Find it here: No. 52, Jalan Pantai Berawa, Canggu, Bali. Tel: +62 851 02781872. Open daily 7am-3pm.

3. The Loft

Of course you’re in it for the Instagram, but it doesn’t hurt for the food to be so good, you want to come back again and again. The Loft, which offers the requisite breakfast delights, also has healthy bowls, smoothie bowls and juices – all healthy and colourful!

What to order: poke bowl (base of quinoa, rice or mix leaves, with mixed veggies, edamame, furikake, pickled ginger, seaweed with a light wasabi kewpie, special ponzu sauce and green tortillas on the side).

Find it here: No. 50A, Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong, Canggu, Bali. Tel: +62 812-3758-0318. Open daily, 6.30am-10pm.

Homemade granola, all-day breakfast, double ristretto coffee – buzzwords for hipster cafe-goers! The Australian cafe culture force is strong at The Common (Canggu’s new kid on the block), where you get both farm-to-table goodness and the laid-back Bali atmosphere you flew in for.

What to order: coffee!

Find it here: No. 65, Jalan Batu Bolong, Canggu, Bali. Open daily 6am-10pm.

5. Cafe Vida

Cafe Vida, housed in a traditional Balinese compound with a garden, specialises in organic food as well as some really yummy vegan and gluten-free desserts even non-vegans will love.

What to order: fish tacos and raw vegan cakes.

Find it here: No. 38A, Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong, Canggu, Bali. Tel: +62 813-3988-6864. Open daily, 7am-10.30pm.

Kynd

Technically, Kynd is in Seminyak, but it’s still worth a mention because, come on, it’s only about half an hour from central Canggu and there’s something to be said if it keeps getting name-dropped by Instagramers. And no wonder – the cafe is beautiful (and pink!), and its “plant-based” food is delicious.

What to order: the Nelson (beetroot hummus, breaky bruschetta, rocket, dukkah and balsamic reduction).

Find it here: No. 12, Jalan Petitenget, Seminyak, Bali. Tel: +62 859 3112 0209. Open daily, 6am-5pm.
