Asia is home to some of the best nightlife and a new list of the world’s top bars has given recognition to the region’s best watering holes. Ten of the bars located in cities in the region were named among the The World’s 50 Best Bars 2018 list – with five of them found in Singapore. 6 trendy Hong Kong bars in which to celebrate the joys of summer This list, released in London on October 3 by the group William Reed Business Media, is based on votes by more than 500 industry experts from across the globe, taking into account the most innovative and exciting developments in bars and bartending. Manhattan, Singapore – ranked third Manhattan, located in the five-star hotel, Regent Singapore, is best known for its drinks inspired by the Golden Age of cocktails and fine drinking. The bar prides itself on looking grand and modern, while retaining some old New York vibes. It was ranked the third best bar in the world this year, up from seventh place last year. Manhattan also retained its title of Asia’s best bar, after clinching the top spot in the Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2018 list for the second year running in May. 2. Atlas, Singapore – eighth The Atlas bar is located on the ground floor of Parkview Square, one of Singapore’s most iconic buildings. The architecture of the building was inspired by art deco skyscrapers in Europe and New York. The Old Man, Hong Kong – 10th With the intention of paying tribute to American novelist Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man draws great inspiration from his novels, history and folklore using culinary gear and unique ingredients. The ground-floor bijou bar in Aberdeen Street, in SoHo, in Central district – ranked 10th best in the world – is named after Hemingway’s novel, The Old Man and the Sea. It is barely over a year old, and is also the winner of the Highest New Entry Award. 4. Bar High Five, Tokyo – 12th Hidetsugu Ueno, the owner of the bar High Five – located in Efflore Ginza 5 Building in the Ginza district of Chou, in Tokyo – √is a man without a menu. Tell him what you feel like drinking and he will concoct a drink that will take you by surprise. Native, located in Amoy Street, which is ranked the 13th best bar in the world, is focused on using only regional and local produce. Speak Low, Shanghai – 20th Visit Speak Low – ranked the 20th best bar in the world – and you will feel as if you are in a fairy tale. Visitors need to enter via a barware store on the ground floor in Fuxing Zhong Road, in the Huangpu district, of Shanghai. You will have to tell a member of staff in the store that you are there for the drinks, and a bookcase on the back wall will open up to let you into the inner sanctum. Also, the only way to access the bar’s second floor is to push on Shanghai on a secret map. 7. Operation Dagger, Singapore – 23rd If there is one word to describe Operation Dagger, it would be “mysterious”. According to the ResDiary restaurant booking website, the bar – ranked the 23rd best bar in the world – is hidden along a back alley on Ann Siang Hill. It is so nondescript that even the building in which it is situated does not have a name. A dingy staircase will bring you further down and, before you know it, the smoky smell of burnt herbs will hit you. That is when you know you are in the right place. 5 bars in Kuala Lumpur that will take you back to the future 8. 28 HongKong Street, Singapore – 34th Despite all the accolades, the bar 28 HongKong Street, in Singapore, makes sure it steers away from coming across as grandiloquent. It is reportedly a little difficult to find along Hong Kong Street, but it is worth the effort. The staff understand that perfection lies in a combination of delicious, unpretentious drinks and a generously warm and friendly attitude. It is honest, humble and comfortable in its own skin. 9. Indulge Experimental Bistro, Taipei – 38th Indulge Experimental Bistro wins its spot thanks to its 38th place among the top 50 bars of the world for embracing “the best of the global drinks mixology movement” with “its own Taiwanese accent in all elements, from drinks to decor to service”. The food is modern European but the cocktails feature Asian ingredients according to season. This is its second consecutive year in The World’s 50 Best Bars list for the bar, located in Lane 219, Section 1, Fuxing South Road, in Taipei City’s Da’an district, following a second-place finish in this year’s Asia’s 50 Best Bars list. Known for its “farm-to-bar” menu, owner Hiroyasu Kayama uses ingredients from the farm in his parents’ home, just north of Tokyo. There, he plants aniseed, fennel, mint, juniper and other flora.
