Love ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ but hate the long queues for food in Singapore?
Try these 4 less well-trodden hot spots in the Lion City for delicious food
Mention the words Crazy Rich Asians and you are likely to conjure up images of scrumptious chilli crabs, bustling hawker centres and a thirst-quenching Singapore Sling or three.
Indeed, the 2018 box office-topping romantic comedy, adapted from Kevin Kwan’s eponymous bestselling novel, has made waves not only for its all-Asian cast, but also for putting Singapore’s food scene – and locations like Newton Circus Food Centre, Ce La Vi Skybar and No Signboard Seafood – firmly on the world map.
But with their new-found fame also came tourists – and hour-long queues. So for those who wish to dig deeper into what the Lion City has to offer (hint: there is a lot), here are four less well-trodden hot spots offering equally-delicious food, recommended by locals.
Instead of: Newton Circus Food Centre Try: Makansutra Gluttons Bay
Long before being the first stop Nick Young (Henry Golding) whisks girlfriend Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) off to on arrival in Singapore, Newton Food Centre has been one of the city’s best-known hawker centres.
Yet giving it a run for its money is the refurbished (and dare we say, cleaner) Makansutra Gluttons Bay. The beautifully-lit, alfresco hawker centre is perched alongside Marina Bay’s spectacular harbourfront complete with stalls offering everything from barbecue stingrays to chicken rice and ice kachang. Enjoy them against the backdrop of Singapore’s dazzling skyline and the occasional live band.
