Scottish distillery, owned by Diageo, creates only 94 bottles of the Scotch, which public can buy only after entering online draw

What’s the fairest way to give connoisseurs around the world the chance to buy one of only 94 bottles to be released of a rare Scotch whisky?

Mortlach Distillery in Dufftown, Scotland, believes it is to put names in a hat – a virtual hat, that is.

For two weeks from Tuesday, April 9, whisky lovers can register their names online at www.justerinis.com/Mortlach1971Release for the chance to buy a bottle of Mortlach 47-Year-Old, the oldest whisky ever released direct from the distillery.

Yet the opportunity to buy comes with no small commitment, however: a price tag of £10,000 (US$13,000). Still, it is far less than an unnamed buyer in Singapore paid on March 25 when bottle eight was put up for auction for charity at a private event. That bottle sold for £28,000.

On April 9, at launch events in Singapore and London, 47 lucky members of the public who also signed up online and were selected by ballot, were able to taste the whisky.

Mortlach is known for its unusually robust character, which sets it apart from the sweet and mellow style of other Speyside whiskies.

Diageo-owned Mortlach has created only 94 bottles of the whisky from the first of three American oak hogshead casks filled in April 1971, and bottled at 46.8 per cent alcohol by volume.
