8 Shanghai hotels offering height of elegance and opulence
Bulgari Hotel Shanghai, Amanyangyun, Fairmont Peace Hotel, PuLi Hotel and Spa and Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund are among city’s luxurious offerings
Shanghai was in the spotlight in late July when the United States Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and trade representative Robert Lighthizer landed in China to meet Vice-Premier Liu He to discuss the ongoing Sino-US trade war.
The city – where the Nixon Administration’s landmark 1972 Shanghai Communiqué was signed – is symbolic as “the window of China’s reform and opening up and the country’s economic heart: it could be a positive change”, Liao Qun, China Citic Bank International’s chief economist, told the South China Morning Post.
With all eyes on some of the world’s most demanding travellers, check out the city’s most luxurious places to stay.
Amanyangyun
Few hotel brands can provide the kind of exclusive luxury that Aman is able to do. Shanghai’s Amanyangyun, in truth about 40 minutes outside the city in the depths of a camphor forest, makes for the perfect retreat following any high stakes, high-pressure business trip.
Effortlessly marrying history with modern luxury, 50 Ming dynasty (1368 to 1644) and Qing dynasty (1644–1911) villas were rescued from the wrecking ball to create 26 suites.
Designed by Kerry Hill Architects, each one is bathed in natural light and finished with impeccable touches of bamboo and stonework.
Tranquil courtyards, traditional Kunqu opera, tea ceremonies, lush gardens and one of Aman’s most comprehensive spas are among the amenities that complete the stunning resort property.
