The Hong Kong Direct Subsidy Scheme Schools Council (HKDSSSC) Exposition, which took place on November 19th at The Cordis Hotel, was the biggest gathering of Hong Kong’s local Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) schools to date. The event was an excellent opportunity for parents to find out more about the elite, as well as affordable education the city has to offer.
With over 33 schools participating, many principals and education executives were given a platform to show parents what their schools have to offer. Over 3,000 parents attended the event, making the expo a “record-breaking” one for the DSS council. The council’s chairman, Dr. Chiu Cheung Ki, praised SCMP for helping to elevate the brand of DSS schools.
“It was a great event; excellent arrangement and good location with great number of visitors helping the DSS schools reach out to a great number of people,” says Samuel Cheng, school principal of United Christian College (Kowloon East).
In addition to the school booths, there were two panel discussions in which parents got to listen to principals and executives talk shop over key educational issues.
Mr. Lo Wai Shing, Chief Principal of Evangel College kick-started the morning discussion by saying: “DSS schools have to perform well in order to obtain both the favour of parents and the subsidy from the government—which is why we always have a great urgency and motivation to up the game.”
The topic of tuition fee was brought up during the afternoon session, to which Dr. Li Pak-hung, Principal of ECF Saint Too Canaan College, reassured parents: “Tuition should not be a concern for parents, as most DSS schools provide adequate subsidy for needy families.”
