A guide to studying medicine in Hong Kong
John Cremer

Finding a place to study medicine is extremely challenging, whether in Hong Kong or at universities in other parts of the world. Jennifer Ma, founder and director of specialist consultants ARCH Education, asked a range of people with direct experience and expertise to give their thoughts and advice on different aspects of the process.

1. Relevant extra-curricular activities (ECAs)

Actions speak louder than words when it comes to demonstrating interests and motivation. Therefore, anything like shadowing a professional, gaining international experience or spending time alongside clinical scientists or doctors will count in your favour. Such activities serve to test your own aptitude and determination to follow a career in medicine. It is also a chance to do some soul-searching and. later on, during the application and interview process can provide clear “evidence” of your personal drive and commitment.

Ma also notes that while universities in Britain usually require some relevant work experience in the form of hospital/ clinical placement and attachments, those in Hong Kong do not make this a mandatory requirement.
