Some say that times of change are also times of opportunity. If you agree and you have the inclination, then it's probably high time to pursue a Master of Science (MSc) in China Business Studies to discover the opportunities offered by the mainland's once-in-a-decade political transition.

The recent change in China's leadership implies a wide range of opportunities, according to Dr Lu Haitian, associate professor and programme director of the MSc in China Business Studies at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).

"The new leaders have a new mentality and focus. It is also a time when old political connections may collapse and new candidates replace them at provincial level and below that," Lu says. "We want the students to understand both the opportunities and challenges."

Apart from looking at the expected new policies, the programme will also analyse the changes in China's business environment, including investment, exports and consumption. It aims to help students understand the direction of mainland development and evaluate how businesses should shape their strategies in response.

The multidisciplinary MSc has a China focus, but presents Hong Kong not only as a bridge for foreigners hoping to enter China, but also as a future gateway for Chinese businesses aiming for the global market.

The courses cover Chinese law, culture, economy and finance. "Supported by the Faculty of Humanities, we have greatly increased the proportion of subjects on the impact of culture," Lu says.
