India is ready to bid for the 2036 Summer Olympic Games, sports minister Anurag Thakur said on Wednesday, with the state of Gujarat and its biggest city Ahmedabad seen as the likely candidate.
The plan will be put to the International Olympic Committee at its session in Mumbai in September.
“We have hopes and I am sure India will fully prepare and bid for the Olympics,” Thakur told the Times of India.
“Gujarat has several times expressed interest in hosting the Olympics. They have the infrastructure – from hotels, hostels, airports and sports complexes. They are serious about the bid. It’s also part of the state government’s manifesto to host the Olympics in Gujarat.”

The 2024 Games will be held in Paris, 2028 in Los Angeles and 2032 in Brisbane.
India is set to face competition for 2036 from Indonesia and South Korea, while 2022 football World Cup host Qatar could also bid.
Delhi hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games but the event was widely criticised.
News of India’s bid comes the week the Japanese public hailed the 2020 Olympic Games a ‘waste of money’.
The bill for the Japanese capital hosting the Olympics and Paralympics totalled 1.699 trillion yen (US$12.88 billion), according to an official audit, nearly 20 per cent more than the organising committee claimed in an initial report issued in June.
A South China Morning Post report in July last year highlighted the cost of the Olympic Games, pointing out that a host city needs to commit billions of dollars for venues, infrastructure, personnel and entertainment. It revealed that, in almost all cases, the actual cost is much higher than the estimates put forward when a city wins the bid.
