Police say two buses collided on a road in northeastern Bangladesh and 13 people were killed.

Local police chief Amulya Bhushan Barua says another 13 people were injured in the crash early on Friday. At least 10 of the dead were in one family.

The crash happened in Sylhet district, 192 kilometres northeast of the capital, Dhaka.

Barua did not give further details.

Fatal road accidents, blamed on rash driving, unfit vehicles and lax rules, are common in Bangladesh.

The government says at least 10,000 people die in road accidents every year, one of the world’s highest casualty rates.
