A radio journalist was shot dead by a motorcycle-riding gunman in the northern Philippines, say police.

Cabanatuan city police chief Eli Depra said no motive was known for the killing of Julius Cauzo, 51.

His colleague at the DWJJ radio station, Elena Quijano, says he had received death threats but it was unclear why.

Cauzo was the vice-president of the provincial press club.

The media watchdog Centre for Media Freedom and Responsibility says if his death is found to be work-related, he would be the fourth journalist killed in the Philippines this year.

More than 150 reporters have been killed in the Philippines since 1986, including 32 in the Maguindanao massacre in 2009 – the single worst media killing in the world.
