Alert over smoking volcano in West Java JAKARTA - Indonesian scientists say they are closely monitoring a smoking volcano on West Java, urging people to stay off the mountain's slope. Volcanologist Hendra Gunawan said Mount Tangkuban Perahu had been shooting smoke and ash nearly 500 metres into the air since Monday, and the second-highest alert level was now in place. The 2,084-metre mountain is one of Java's most popular tourist attractions, where people can hike to the edge of the crater to view boiling mud up close. It last erupted in 1983. AP 5 Indonesian officers held over abuse clip JAKARTA - Indonesian police arrested five policemen over the alleged torture of militants after a video posted on YouTube showed a suspect being shot and others abused. The blurry 14-minute video, also posted by several Islamic groups, depicts officers forcing a man to strip to his underwear before they shoot him, apparently in the chest. "We arrested five policemen today and others are still being questioned," national police detective chief Sutarman said in a text message, without giving further details. AFP
