Cambodian opposition leader Sam Rainsy barred from poll
Election committee rules that the opposition leader, seen as the best chance to beat Hun Sen, is not eligible to stand in Sunday's election

Cambodia's newly returned opposition leader, Sam Rainsy, cannot be a candidate in Sunday's polls, election authorities ruled yesterday, rejecting his application to stand against strongman Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Sam Rainsy, who was greeted by huge crowds last Friday after his return from self-imposed exile in France, "did not fulfil the conditions in the process of registering candidates", said the National Election Committee.
"Regarding the request to register your excellency's name, the NEC cannot include it based on the … electoral law," it said in a letter in response to his application to be added to the list.
NEC officials have previously suggested that it was unlikely the opposition leader, who was removed from the electoral register late last year, would be able to stand in Sunday's polls under the current law.
Sam Rainsy has reportedly warned of a backlash if he is barred from standing.
