China has warned its citizens not to travel to the Philippines after a Chinese teenager was kidnapped and after government agents arrested a group of men who said they planned to attack the Chinese embassy in Manila.

“Given that the safety situation in the Philippines is deteriorating, the consular service of the foreign ministry is asking Chinese nationals not to travel to the Philippines for the time being,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

Li Peizhi, 18, who worked in a family-run store, was abducted late on Thursday by unidentified gunmen in Zamboanga Sibugay province’s Kabasalan township, according to senior police inspector Leo Castillo.

The gunmen also took 20,000 pesos (HK$3,521) from the store’s cash register.

“Most likely, they were Muslim militants,” Police Superintendant Jose Bayani Legados Gucela of the Philippine police’s Regional 9 office told the South China Morning Post on Friday. “We cannot yet divulge the identity of the suspects as the investigation is still ongoing.”

Castillo, the provincial police spokesman, said officers in pursuit found the kidnappers’ vehicle, said to be a Suzuki minivan, burning in a village about two kilometres away.

A Suzuki minivan the kidnappers used for the assault was found burnt about 2km away from Li’s store.
