Japan announces withdrawal from whaling treaty, eyes return to commercial hunting in 2019

  • Spokesman Yoshihide Suga said government agreed to leave the International Whaling Commission effective June 30
  • Announcement was widely expected and comes after Japan failed earlier this year to convince the IWC to allow it to resume commercial whaling
