Saudi Arabia has executed a Filipino domestic helper found guilty in a 2015 murder case, said the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The 39-year-old woman was sentenced to death by the Saudi Supreme Judicial Council and executed on Tuesday, after the court determined her case as one which could not be settled with “blood money”. Her relatives were informed of her death the next day.

Under sharia law, blood money is a financial compensation made by an accused to a victim’s family in cases of murder.

In some earlier cases, Philippine nationals have escaped death row in the Middle East nation by paying blood money to relatives of individuals they had killed.

“The department regrets that it was not able to save the life of the Filipina,” said the DFA, which added legal assistance was provided during the worker’s trial.
