The United States military said on Wednesday that it has been unable to reach North Korean officials to discuss the recovery of American service members who died and were left behind in the Korean war, a new indication of fraying relations between the two nations.
The Defence Department agency that recovers human remains from past wars said in a statement that US efforts to communicate with the North Korean army regarding the resumption of joint recovery operations in 2019 have been suspended.

“We have reached the point where we can no longer effectively plan, coordinate, and conduct field operations in [North Korea} during this financial year, which ends on September 30,” the statement said. “We are assessing possible next steps in resuming communications with the [North Koreans] to plan for potential joint recovery operations to be scheduled [next financial year].”

The decision, announced by the Defence Prisoners of War/Missing in Action Accounting Agency (DPAA), adds another layer of complexity to US relations with North Korea.

No communication about repatriation has occurred since President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met in a summit in Hanoi, Vietnam, in late February, the agency said. Trump abruptly ended negotiations after claiming that Kim demanded that the US remove all economic sanctions against his country without North Korea ending its nuclear programme.

A Pentagon spokesman, Army Lieutenant Colonel David Eastburn, said in another statement that the DPAA “remains open to productive discussions” with North Korea about the resumption of recovery operations.
