Video | 'The ground is shaking', video shows Everest camp swamped by deadly avalanche

A video clip has emerged online that appears to show the terrifying moment a climbers’ camp in Everest is ripped apart by a massive avalanche triggered by the deadly Nepal earthquake.

In the footage, published on YouTube under the title “Hit by Avalanche in Everest Basecamp 25.04.2015”, a climber is heard saying “the ground is shaking”, seconds before he and about a dozen others ducked for safety as a wall of snow headed for the camp.

The climber was then seen digging himself out of the snow a minute later, and the camp itself is shown as half-buried.

The avalanches are known to have killed 178 people on Everest, and hundreds of foreign and Nepalese climbers remained trapped as of Monday in the worst single disaster to hit the world’s highest mountain.
