Former cricket star Imran Khan declares victory in Pakistani election but results yet to be confirmed
The election marked only the second time in Pakistan’s 71-year history that one civilian government has handed power to another

Pakistan cricket hero turned politician Imran Khan claimed victory in a wide-ranging address to the nation on Thursday in the country’s tense general election, following accusations of “blatant” vote-rigging by rival parties.
“We were successful and we were given a mandate,” Khan, 65, said during a live broadcast from his home in the capital Islamabad, adding that there would be “no politician victimisation” of his opponents in the future. He went on to call the elections the “most transparent” in the country’s history.
Pakistan’s election commission struggled with technical problems and had to revert to a manual count, delaying the announcement of final results until Friday. However, unofficial projections by various local media outlets showed Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party enjoying a clear lead.
During the broadcast, Khan vowed to tackle corruption that was “eating our country like a cancer”.
He also touched on promises to balance relations with the US that would be “beneficial” for both countries.
