India vows to probe US charge that it directed plot to kill activist, changing tack from Canada case
- Official reaction differs sharply from the diplomatic uproar when Ottawa made similar claims in September, analysts note
- However, the case is unlikely to dampen Washington’s courtship of New Delhi since countering China remains crucial, they say

The reaction, analysts noted, sharply contrasted to the diplomatic spat that erupted after Canada made similar claims in September that Indian government agents could have been behind the murder of a Canadian Sikh.
The controversy is unlikely to diminish Washington’s growing relationship with New Delhi since countering China in the Indo-Pacific region remains the foundation of the strategic partnership, they said.
Michael Kugelman of the Wilson Centre reckoned that a rapidly deepening partnership, “combined with strong strategic convergences around the China issue”, meant that the relationship should “escape relatively unscathed”.
On Thursday, Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi in New Delhi described the charges as “a matter of concern”.
