India has responded to a US indictment contending that an Indian government official was behind a plot to kill an American Sikh with a pledge to investigate “all the relevant aspects of the matter”.

The reaction, analysts noted, sharply contrasted to the diplomatic spat that erupted after Canada made similar claims in September that Indian government agents could have been behind the murder of a Canadian Sikh.

The controversy is unlikely to diminish Washington’s growing relationship with New Delhi since countering China in the Indo-Pacific region remains the foundation of the strategic partnership, they said.

Michael Kugelman of the Wilson Centre reckoned that a rapidly deepening partnership, “combined with strong strategic convergences around the China issue”, meant that the relationship should “escape relatively unscathed”.
