An Indonesian family of seven and two Malaysian masterminds involved in the issuance of fake Malaysian identity cards, or MyKad, were nabbed during a six-hour sting operation by the National Registration Department (NRD) in Tawau, Malaysia.
The family, including a pair of twin brothers, apparently acted as agents in the sale of the fake identity cards to the large migrant population in Tawau, Semporna and Kunak.
The family members, aged between 20 and 60, were arrested at their home in Kampung Tanjung Batu in Tawau.
The Malaysian masterminds are aged 45 and 50.
Describing it as the biggest bust involving fake IC syndicates in the state, NRD investigations and enforcement director Mohamad Yusri Hashim said they also seized 29 fake MyKads, RM3,839 (US$857), two vehicles, and equipment to take fingerprints of the applicants.
