A 50-kilogram unexploded bomb from world war two was detonated by army personnel in Singapore on Monday in a large-scale planned operation that involved the evacuation of nearby condominiums and a hotel, and halted traffic.

Though such bombs have been found in the city state from time to time, usually at construction sites, this time caused more disruption as the construction site is within a residential area.

Nearby roads were closed off to the public and buses diverted, while a stretch of the Singapore River was closed to boat traffic.

Residents of more than 600 condominium units were ordered to evacuate from early morning for safety reasons during the detonation work as police set up a 200-metre safety cordon around the site.

The Grand Copthorne Waterfront temporarily moved guests from some parts of the hotel that was nearer to the site.
