Two Filipinos were killed and 11 are missing after two massive explosions in the Lebanese capital of Beirut, while an Australian was killed and the country’s embassy badly damaged.

Ed Menez, a spokesman for the Philippines’ foreign ministry, on Wednesday said eight Filipinos were also wounded in the blasts that occurred at the city’s port on Tuesday.

All victims were in their employers’ houses during the explosions, he said.

“The Philippine embassy is in touch with the Filipino community in Lebanon to assess the situation and provide assistance to any affected Filipinos,” the department said in a statement.

Some 33,000 Filipinos live and work in Lebanon, with 75 per cent of them staying in the greater Beirut area, Menez said.

“Our hearts go out to the Lebanese people. And I hope material and medical help as well,” Philippine Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jnr tweeted.
