Teh Hong Piow, founder of Malaysia’s Public Bank, dies at 92

The founder and chairman emeritus of Malaysia’s second-largest bank, Teh Hong Piow, died peacefully on Monday morning at the age of 92.

Public Bank Group called his passing a “great loss” to the company.

“On behalf of the board, management, and staff of the Public Bank Group, we extend our most heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to Teh’s family,” Public Bank said in a statement.

Teh was born in Singapore on March 14, 1930, and he attended his formal primary and secondary education at the Anglo Chinese School there, a biography note on Public Bank’s website said.

He married Puan Seri Tay Sock Noy in 1956 and they had four children.

Public Bank’s shares declined by 4 sen to 4.36 ringgit at press time. The bank is the second-largest company listed on Bursa Malaysia with a market capitalisation of 85 billion ringgit (US$26.11 billion).
