An ice little earner: Chengdu residents make thousands selling snowmen
Thanks to a rare snowfall, villagers were able to flex their creative and entrepreneurial skills
Recently, Chengdu had its first snow in years - and several villagers in the city’s Longquanyi district managed to monetise snowmen.
Aside from short periods of frost every winter, prolonged snowfall seldomly occurs in Chengdu.
On Febuary 10, however, a cold spell gripping the region provided enough white powder for a group of Longquanyi residents to start a small business selling snowmen.
According to local media reports, the residents offered to build and decorate snow babies, snow mums and snow papas on the cars of tourists passing through the area, charging a price of 20 to 30 yuan (HK$26 to 38) for each creation.
Total sales reportedly exceeded a thousand yuan (HK$1,280).
Several commentators on Chinese web portal NetEase accused the snow builders of “doing anything for money,” but others defended their wintery creations.
“Some folks in Chengdu have rarely seen snow, let alone a snowman,” one netizen quipped. “Of course they’d be curious and try to make some money on the side. Who wouldn’t?”
