Drink-driving bungle
A man has been arrested in Huoshan county near Luan for drink-driving after he rang up the police by mistake and then challenged an officer to a fight, the Anhui Business News reports. The drunken man dialled the police in error and then started arguing with a police officer. He told the officer he would drive to a residential compound to meet him for a fight. The police then went to the area and arrested the man when they found him in his car, the report said.
School run in police car
A policeman in Huangshan has been suspended after he used his police car to drive his daughter to school, Xinhua reports. A member of the public saw the officer using the police car for his personal use several times and uploaded a video to the internet. The police car has been taken away from the officer.
Chongqing
Trek abandoned
Two college students abandoned an attempt to hike from the municipality to Chengdu in Sichuan province because of exhaustion and blistered feet, the Chongqing Shang Bao reports. The pair had walked about 200km in five days, just over half the distance. They had to take a bus to finish the journey.
Old folks home visit rule
An old people's home in Yuzhong district has ruled that relatives of elderly residents must visit at least once a month, the Chongqing Evening News reports. The centre's staff said that more than 80 per cent of the elderly were over 85 and unable to visit their families. Staff said visits from relatives helped improve old people's mental health.

Dog cruelty video
A video showing an old man in Fuzhou dragging a dog behind him as he rides an electric bike has sparked criticism online, the Southeast Express reports. A string around the dog's neck is attached to the bike and blood can be seen around the animal's stomach as it is pulled along the street. The footage was uploaded to the internet by a passer-by. Some have called for the man to be tracked down to stop him doing it again.
Fresh take on cheongsam
Seventy women designers have held a fashion show in Quanzhou featuring the cheongsam, or qipao in Putonghua, the figure-hugging traditional Chinese dress, the news website Mnw.cn reports. Some of the designs were modern takes on the dress while others were more traditional styles. The aim was also to allow designers to share ideas on making the look more interesting.

2 killed at kindergarten
Two pupils were killed and one injured when a heavy iron gate they were playing on fell, Xinhua reports. The children were playing at a kindergarten in Tunchang county on the island while there were no teachers nearby. The third child's injuries are not said to be life-threatening. The local authorities are investigating building safety standards at the school.
Catch-and-release 'scam'
A Buddhist tourist attraction in Sanya has been accused of involvement in a scam in which tourists pay to release animals back into the sea, the news website Chinanews.com reports. Visitors paid 39 yuan (HK$49) to release small fish and 1,999 yuan to put a turtle back in the wild. Some visitors claimed that fishermen immediately re-caught the turtles to sell back to the centre on the cheap. The local authorities are investigating whether a fraud has been committed.

Child, 6, robbed
Two carjackers in Qinhuangdao only allowed a family to drive off after their six-year-old daughter had contributed an extra 0.2 yuan to the thieves' haul, Hebei Daily reports. The robbers stopped the mother and daughter's car on the way to school. They were not satisfied when the woman handed over 230 yuan, so the girl gave them the small change she had. They then left. The robbers were later caught by the police.
Building protection
The provincial authorities have issued a by-law to punish people who destroy buildings or places of historical or cultural interest, Hebei Daily reports. The heaviest penalty is 1 million yuan. Xinhua reported earlier this year that a national committee had been formed to help protect 20th century buildings of architectural interest around the country.

Hotel TV switch
Police in Luoyang have arrested a couple after they allegedly took an expensive liquid-crystal display television from a hotel room and replaced with it a broken one, Dahe Daily reports. Police had difficulties solving the case because the couple used fake identification and bogus personal phone numbers when they checked in. They were caught after they used the same ID to check in to another hotel soon afterwards and then tried to steal another TV.
Boy saved from drowning
A four-year-old boy was saved after he fell into a lake at Nanshao county near Nanyang , Dahe Daily reports. The boy's family were visiting a scenic area when he fell into the water. Three men jumped into the lake and rescued him. The men then left without leaving their names. The boy's parents are trying to trace them so they can thank them properly.

Short walk on water
A tourist in Changsha fell into a lake because the weed growing on the surface was so thick he thought it was a lawn, the news website Voc.com.cn reports. The lake in the Martyr's Memorial Park is covered in duckweed and the authorities have promised to clean it up. The plant can be an indicator of water pollution. The man was not seriously injured.
Fake goods up in flames
The authorities in Zhangjiajie have launched a crackdown on fake products and burned counterfeit goods worth 1 million yuan, the news website People.cn reports. The city has investigated 169 cases of fake products during the campaign, which included mobile phones, clothes, food and alcohol. About 79 per cent of counterfeit goods seized at European Union border controls last year came from China.
Shaanxi
Driver mows down cyclist
A court in Weinan has jailed a man for 10 years for driving over and killing a cyclist who he had just knocked off his bike, Huashang Daily reports. The report said the motorist, 29, drove over the accident victim several times as he tried to manoeuvre his car to flee from the scene. He was convicted of manslaughter.
Ex-official denies gambling
Dong Chunyuan, the former director of the Shaanxi Hanzhong Municipal Water Conservancy Bureau, has denied gambling at the Hanzhong Post Hotel despite pictures on a microblog placing him at the scene, the Beijing News reports. Photos of Dong with cash in his hand and playing mahjong went viral on Tuesday but Dong said he was only playing the game, not gambling. Dong said he began playing mahjong after retiring in early 2012. The matter has been referred for investigation.
