Cop's lavish banquet
A police officer in Bengbu was reprimanded after details were released on the internet of an extravagant banquet he held for his 10-year-old son's birthday last month, the Anhui Business News reports. The city's anti-corruption authorities launched an investigation and found that the officer at the public security bureau's Longzi Lake branch accepted 89,000 yuan (HK$112,000) as gift from guests at the event.
Ambulance crash
An ambulance ran a red light and crashed, resulting in injuries to two pedestrians in Jixi county near Xuancheng , the Anhui Business News reports. Traffic authorities said the ambulance hit a car, which lost control and struck the two victims at a crossroads. They were seriously injured. The authorities said the driver of the ambulance should bear full responsibility because the patient in the emergency vehicle was not in a critical condition and there was no need to rush through the traffic lights.

Finger severed in machine
A nine-year-old boy from Harbin lost a finger after he put his hand into a conveyor belt at a farm, the news website Chinanews.com reports. Surgeons managed to sew back on two other fingers caught in the belt. His parents work at the farm. The boy is in a stable condition in hospital, according to the report.
Breast cancer rise
A doctor in Harbin says the number of young women in the city getting breast cancer is on the rise, the news website Chinanews.com reports. The doctor, a cancer specialist in the city, said about 10 per cent of women with breast cancer in Harbin were under the age of 35. He said the increase was partly due to younger women's unhealthy lifestyle.

Office prices dispute
A property developer in Yangzhou has been accused of trying to mislead customers by quoting the price of offices in a new building by the cubic rather than square metre, the Yangtze Evening Post reports. The developer said offices cost 2,588 yuan a cubic metre. The going rate for office space in the area is usually about 9,000 yuan a square metre. The report said many people were interested in buying because they did not spot the difference in measurement and thought they were getting a bargain.
Romeo driver fined
A driver in Nanjing was stopped and fined 250 yuan after he was spotted veering to both sides of the road while putting on aftershave as he drove to a date, the Yangtze Evening Post reports. A traffic police officer saw the motorist driving erratically. He stopped the car after it drove through a red light. The man said he was in a hurry because he was meeting his girlfriend for her birthday.

Residential block sued
A woman living on the ground floor of a residential building in Nanchang is suing everybody living in the complex after a block of concrete fell on to her car, Jiangxi Daily reports. The woman said she had talked to every family living above her in the six-floor building, but nobody would accept liability to pay for her car's repairs, the report said.
'Pollution' kills frogs
A farmer in Ruichang said that more than 400,000 bullfrogs died after river water, later allegedly found to be polluted, was pumped into their ponds, Jiangxi Daily reports. The farmer said the animals died soon after the river water was pumped in. The local authorities had been spraying large amounts of pesticides in the area. The farmer wants the local government to pay him 300,000 yuan in compensation.

Anti-terrorism drill
A large counterterrorism drill has taken place in Panshi , the news website Chinanews.com reports. The exercise simulated terrorists attacking highway tollbooths and taking staff hostage. The departments involved included the police and fire brigade.
Father 'abducted son'
Police have accused a man of organising the attempted abduction of his two-year-old son in Jilin city after he separated from the boy's mother, the news website Chinanews.com reports. The boy was snatched as he and his mother were walking to a nursery school. The boy was driven off in a white car. The man who took the child was later arrested and the boy returned to his mother. Police suspect the father hired the man to snatch the child.

Snake home invasion
A woman living in a residential block in Huanggu district in Shenyang says the building is infested with snakes that used to be her pets, the Huashang Morning News reports. The woman said she bought more than 20 snakes over the past three years, but lost most of them. Firefighters are regularly called out to deal with the reptiles, with the largest now measuring more than a metre. The woman apologised for the "inconvenience" she caused. The former pets are red-banded snakes and are not poisonous.
Fugitive officials caught
The province's anti-corruption investigators have tracked down and detained 382 former government employees on the run for alleged graft since 2008, Xinhua reports. The authorities did not reveal whether the suspects were arrested in China or overseas, but promised to step up the hunt for fugitives in the coming months. Rewards are offered for information to locate the officials.

Historic HQ renovated
The renovation of a Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) government headquarters building in Linyi county near Yuncheng will be completed by the end of the year, Xinhua reports. The work started four years ago with a budget of 13 million yuan. The curator of the Linyi county museum said the building, including offices, a court and prison, was the only Yuan dynasty county headquarters remaining in China and was of enormous historic interest. The report said more than 200 county governors had come and gone over the centuries, while the building had survived fire, floods and earthquakes.
Astronauts wanted
Liu Wang, the first astronaut from China to manually dock a spacecraft with another in space, says he hopes more young people will get involved in the country's space programme, Taiyuan Daily reports. Liu gave a lecture to students at the North University of China in Taiyuan . Liu was a crew member of the Shenzhou 9 mission in 2012 and he docked a spacecraft with an orbiting space laboratory.

Boy 'beaten to death'
Police in Dazhu county near Dazhou are investigating whether a mother beat her 10-year-old son to death, the news website Newssc.com reports. The authorities said the boy's body was covered in bruises. The child's grandmother said he had been beaten by his mother before because he often played truant and was badly behaved.
School run on a raft
A man in Zhenxing village near Yibin has helped children over the past 27 years to get to school on a bamboo raft, West China City Daily reports. The village is near a lake and the raft is an easy way to get across to the local primary school. There is only one bridge and it is often cut off by floods.
