A car to die for
A 30-year-old man from Fuyang tried to kill himself by drinking pesticide after his parents refused to buy him an 800,000 yuan (HK$1 million) car, the Anhui Business Times reports. Police received a call last Thursday from the man saying he had taken the poison. He is divorced and has three children, but lives with his parents. He saw the vehicle at a car show and had threatened to kill himself because his parents refused to pay up.
Insurance cash 'gambled'
An official at a town in Si county near Suzhou has been arrested for embezzlement after he allegedly gambled away 130,000 yuan in public health insurance payments, the Xinan Evening News reports. The official was put in charge of collecting insurance premiums in July but allegedly kept the cash. He reportedly gambled away all the money in August. He was caught last month.

Sued over funeral delay
A hospital in the capital has been sued for 10,000 yuan for completing paperwork incorrectly and delaying the cremation of an elderly woman, The Beijing News reports. The hospital put the wrong date of birth on the woman's death certificate, writing 1932 rather than 1923. It meant her memorial service and cremation was delayed while her family applied for a correct one.
Sacked over affair
A professor at Peking University has been sacked for having sex with a student and getting her pregnant, the Beijing Times reports. Yu Wanli, an associate professor of international relations, confessed to the university last month. He was expelled from the Communist Party last week.

Fraudster jailed
A former fortune-teller from Hebi has been given a suspended death sentence for fraud, Dahe Daily reports. The man collected about 1.3 billion yuan by promising high returns, but had failed to pay back about 300 million yuan by the time he was arrested. He was a deputy in the local people's congress and lived a life of luxury. Five years ago he was running a fortune-telling stall in a park.
Help for child's surgery
A mother in Xiping county near Zhumadian has received 65,000 yuan in donations to help her one-year-old daughter have a liver transplant, Dahe Daily reports. Her elder daughter died five years ago aged two from a liver illness. The couple was told in Beijing that a transplant could save the young girl's life. The mother will donate her own liver, but cannot afford the surgery and still needs more money for the operation.

3 die in fireworks blast
Three people, including two children, were killed on Saturday afternoon in a village in Changsha county when some leftover fireworks exploded, the Changsha Morning News reports. A farmer was working in his shed when sparks from an electric saw ignited the fireworks. The farmer, his younger son and a grandson were killed.
Profits from fake currency
Three farmers from Yongzhou allegedly bought 20 million yuan in counterfeit notes and resold them for a profit, the news website Rednet.cn reports. They bought the counterfeits in Guangdong, paying 3.5 yuan for each 100 yuan note and later reselling the fake currency for between 7 yuan and 10 yuan. Some of the counterfeits were found in Jiangxi province and police traced them back to Hunan . Seven people have been detained as part of the police investigation, according to the report.

A pregnant woman threatened her sister at knifepoint in Nanjing , demanding the sister finally get her own identity card, the Modern Express reports. The woman had shared her own card with her sister since middle school because her sibling had not been issued with a new one. It meant the mother-to-be could not get married or have her baby registered. Police have promised to resolve the issue by helping to get a new card.
Student falls into lift shaft
A university student in Xuzhou has survived a fall into a lift shaft from the fifth floor, the Modern Express reports. The student was trying to find a toilet on Saturday when he stepped into the shaft by accident. He fell to the ground but his fall was cushioned by old clothing and other debris. The student suffered multiple injuries to his spine and may be paralysed.

Crash ends fugitive's run
A victim of a car accident in Jinan turned out to be a man wanted for 16 years for manslaughter, the New Culture News reports. A car hit a tree last week, killing the driver and injuring four passengers. Police became suspicious after the man refused to help with the crash investigation. He was accused of killing someone 16 years ago during an argument in Baishan . Police found out his real name and arrested him, the report said.
Traffic curbs still in place
The transport authorities in Changchun have denied rumours circulating online that traffic limits to curb congestion have been dropped, the Changchun Evening News reports. The city bans cars from using the roads on some days depending on the final digit of their number plate. The authorities said the measures were still needed to ease congestion.

Police office burgled
A thief stole thousands of yuan in cash from a police office in Baoji when officers were out to lunch, Huashang Daily reports. The thief broke into a traffic control department and stole money collected by officers that morning as well as the patrolmen's own cash. Police officers have been told to ensure their offices are guarded in future, even during lunch breaks.
Row over goats' deaths
The Gaoling county animal disease prevention and control centre has denied it was to blame for the death of 100 goats given an overdose of drugs, Huashang Daily reports. The farmer who owned the goats said a staff member from the centre came to vaccinate the animals in May and prescribed some drugs. The goats gradually died and were later diagnosed as having had an overdose. The centre said the staff member was to blame and it would not pay for the losses.

Teacher took bribes
A teacher at the Shanghai Theatre Academy was sentenced to six years in prison and had 30,000 yuan of his personal assets confiscated for taking 215,000 yuan in bribes from applicants' parents, Xinhua reports. The 32-year-old teacher was involved in student admissions and hinted to parents that he could "tutor" youngsters in their entrance exam. He charged students 2,000 yuan an hour and 6,000 yuan for training materials. He was exposed after parents reported him.
Estate agent sent 'bomb'
An estate agent in the city sent a fake bomb to a woman after she viewed a house but bought it through another agent, the news website Eastday.com reports. The woman was sent the parcel in May and her son found two tins inside connected with wire and batteries. Police came and removed the device only to find it was packed with earth. The woman received a threatening note the next day. The estate agent was arrested.
