A court has ruled that Yuexie Hospital in Pinggu district must pay 7,000 yuan (HK$8,600) to a woman because staff failed to recognise she was pregnant during any of her six check-ups during the pregnancy, reports. The failed diagnosis resulted in labour being induced after just seven months because of complications. The woman, 36, who already has a 14-year-old son, went to the hospital late last year because she was suffering from stomach pains and had not menstruated for several months. Doctors first tried to treat her symptoms with traditional Chinese medicine. The baby's condition was not given.
A 22-year-old mistress has been jailed for three years and fined 3,000 yuan for blackmailing her former lover for 300,000 yuan, the reports. The man was married and the affair lasted two years. He tried to break up with the woman after she got pregnant and said he would pay her 500,000 yuan. But he paid her only 200,000 yuan and she threatened to tell his family and employer if she wasn't given the rest. The pregnancy was terminated.
