All tour coaches, long-distance buses and vehicles transporting "dangerous" goods in nine provinces must install the nation's homegrown Beidou Navigation Satellite System before June, or their vehicle permits may not be approved, Xinhua reports, citing a new Ministry of Transport order.
Is father's gift fool's gold?
A 70-year-old man living on the outskirts of Shunyi district said that three gold bars he bought from a bank for 210,000 yuan (HK$259,000) three years ago have started to rust, the Beijing Evening News reports. The man accused the bank of putting impurities into the bars to cheat buyers. He had planned on giving the gold to his three daughters.

Teen dupes lonely divorcee
A divorced woman in her thirties in Chongqing , desperate to find love, was swindled out of 50,000 yuan by an 18-year-old from Guiyang , Guizhou , who pretended to be a 38-year-old divorced man when the pair met online last year, the Chongqing Daily reports. The woman did not realise she had been duped until she met the teenager in person and saw how young he looked. He later turned himself in to Chongqing police.
Pay row irked factory thief
An assembly line worker and his accomplice have been arrested by Chongqing police for stealing more than 200,000 yuan worth of factory equipment and selling it for 20,000 yuan this month, China News Service reports. The worker said he was angry that the factory suspended production and paid him only 800 yuan last month.
GUANGDONG
Schoolgirl murder probed
Police are investigating the killing of a 17-year-old Shenzhen schoolgirl who was abducted while walking home on Saturday night in the outskirts of Baoan district , the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reports. Her body was found in an abandoned shop on Sunday night. She was last seen by relatives at a family dinner on Saturday before leaving alone.
Jail for vehicle-scam police
Four traffic police officers in Guangzhou have been sentenced to between five and 12 years in jail for taking bribes from a businessman who operated a vehicle-inspection centre between 2004 and last year, the Guangzhou Daily reports. Six officers were found guilty of accepting 12.5 million yuan in exchange for allowing the businessman to certify the use of tens of thousands of vehicles that should have been scrapped. The other two officers have not been sentenced. The businessman received a 17-year jail sentence in October.

Metro eases tunnel traffic
Traffic through Wuhan's Yangtze River Tunnel has declined by 10 per cent, or by more than 6,000 vehicles, since a new metro line overlapping the route was put into service on December 28, the Chutian Metropolis News reports.
No riches in urn ransom
Two brothers were arrested in Hanchuan on Monday for stealing an urn containing the remains of a tycoon's mother and holding it ransom for 100,000 yuan, the Wuhan Evening News reports. Police retrieved the remains after arresting the men, who said they needed the money for housing renovations.

First swine flu case for city
Changsha has diagnosed its first case of swine flu, or the A(H1N1) virus, in the city this year, the Sanxiang City Express reports. The local disease control and prevention centre said the patient was stable and that the possibility of a local outbreak remained very low. At least three people have died from swine flu in Beijing this month.
Safety net for suicide jump
A 40-year-old man's attempt to kill himself by jumping off the Juzizhou Bridge in Changsha yesterday morning, was thwarted when he was pulled from the cold water by the crew of a passing fishing boat, the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald reports. The man was taken to hospital and did not suffer any physical injuries.

Sex shop owner is hooked
A 58-year-old sex shop owner was sentenced to 17 months in jail and fined 5,000 yuan for introducing at least five customers to prostitutes between 2011 and 2012, in an effort to promote items in her store, Longhoo.net reports.
Guilt led to mum-hire offer
A 43-year-old woman from Wangbao township, Qidong , is offering 10,000 yuan to any elderly woman who is willing to pretend to be her mother during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, Longhoo.net reports. The woman said she felt guilty because she was unable to save her mother, who died from a drug overdose in 2009, and she is hoping to repent for her perceived lack of filial piety.

Ten die in gold mine fire
At least 10 workers died of carbon monoxide poisoning and 28 others were injured after a fire broke out in a gold mine in Huadian city on Tuesday morning, China News Service reports. There were 57 miners present when the fire occurred 440 metres underground.
Life in jail for corrupt boss
The former construction bureau chief in Changchun city's Erdao district was sentenced to life imprisonment and the confiscation of all his personal assets after he was convicted of taking 8 million yuan in bribes between 2003 and 2011, the Procuratorial Daily reports.

Hotel work spurs students
Twenty-seven students with mental disabilities have been enrolled in a community college in Xuhui district to study hotel management, after graduating from a vocational school and getting experience in the catering industry, the Jiefang Daily reports. It is rare for Chinese universities to accept students with mental disabilities. The 27 students are expected to receive their diploma in 2½ years.
Free Wi-fi gets on the bus
A Shanghai bus company is offering free Wi-fi on five of its coaches that travel between Shanghai and Ningbo , and there are plans to extend the service to other bus routes bound for Zhejiang province , the Xinmin Evening News reports.

School run no emergency
An ambulance driver for a hospital in Yanting county, Mianyang , was recently sacked after driving his daughter to school in the vehicle and turning on the siren, the Chengdu Economic Daily reports. The hospital said he dropped the girl off before taking the ambulance to a nearby repair shop for maintenance. His wife also rode along in the vehicle.
Unpaid builders sue firm
A group of 113 migrant workers from Sichuan plan to sue a construction company in Hebei for withholding 4 million yuan in salary payments, China National Radio reports. The company refused to pay the workers on the grounds that a project was finished seven months late, but the workers said the company failed to provide construction materials to enable them to finish the job on schedule.
