Toll gate death trial opens
A 50-year-old Hebei truck driver stood trial in Beijing's No 2 Intermediate People's Court on Wednesday for killing a 28-year-old tollkeeper by driving over her at a toll gate in Beijing in July, The Beijing News reports. The tollkeeper tried to stop the driver after an argument over a 10 yuan (HK$12) difference in an expressway toll.
Seasonal high for swine flu
The number of patients who have died from swine flu, the H1N1 virus, in Beijing this year has increased to five after two people died last week, Xinhua reports. Beijing's health bureau said that although the possibility of a local outbreak remained very low, the number of patients diagnosed with swine flu had reached a seasonal high.

Cleaners paid 1,500 yuan
More than 40,000 street cleaners in Guangzhou earn less than 1,500 yuan (HK$1,845) a month even though they're required to work 12 hours a day - from 5am to 5pm - China Central Television reports. Street cleaners who cannot afford to return home for the Lunar New Year and work will be paid five yuan an hour.
Woman's kidnapper shot
Dongguan police are interrogating a 42-year-old man who kidnapped a female technician from a shipyard in Mayong township and held her hostage for two days until he was shot by police on Wednesday, the Information Times reports yesterday. The man had demanded a three million yuan ransom.

Three murderers executed
A woman and two men were executed in Hezhou on Thursday after they were convicted of killing the tax bureau chief in the city's Babu district, his wife, daughter and son at their home in May 2011, China News Service reports. The woman was the wife's sister.
110b yuan set for projects
Guangxi authorities have decided to invest more than 110 billion yuan on transport infrastructure in the autonomous region this year, including finishing the final 1,038 kilometres of 11 railway projects, China News Service reports. The 11 railway lines will cover a total distance of 4,618 kilometres.

Fake train ticket arrests
A man has been arrested by railway police in Haikou for selling more than 680 counterfeit train tickets, with a face value of 150,000 yuan, to students from two universities in Hainan since December, the New Express reports. Police later arrested a 39-year-old woman in Wuhan who had made the fake tickets .
Life for rape of sisters
A man has been jailed for life for raping three mentally disabled sisters at a farm in Dingan county between May and June 2011, the Legal Daily reports. Two of them were under age when they were raped. The sisters had abortions after they were found to be pregnant.

2,400 graft officials held
More than 2,400 corrupt officials were caught in Henan last year after prosecutors investigated 1,544 graft cases in government departments in charge of social security funds, infrastructure, land requisitions, health care and many other fields, the Dahe.cn reports.
Son to pay medical costs
A court in Zhenping county has ordered the elderly son of an 89-year-old man to share his father's medical expenses with his younger brother, even though he signed an agreement with his father in 1993 saying that he would not support him any more, China News Service reports. The father lives with his younger son .
HUNAN
Mines closed over safety
The province closed 10 coal mines that failed to meet work safety standards last year and another five this month, the Rednet.cn news portal reports. At least 53 miners had died in the past two years in three of the 10 coal mines closed last year. There are now 981 coal mines in Hunan , down from 2,456 in 2005, and the number is expected to drop to 180 by the end of this year.
Killer wife on trial
A woman from a village in Baojing county, in the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, has gone on trial, accused of beating her husband to death after he attacked their only son with a knife in October, Rednet.cn reports. The woman burned her husband's body and their house to cover up the crime. The court has yet to hand down its verdict.
JIANGSU
Driver jailed after assault
A driver has been jailed for one year and four months by a court in Xinyi for knocking a woman off her bicycle in July and then throwing banknotes in her face when they argued over compensation, the Llonghoo.net news portal reports. The driver then beat up a man who tried to defend the woman .
Overseas job scam case set
Prosecutors in Yangzhou's Jiangdu district are preparing a case against three men accused of defrauding hundreds of workers by charging them huge commissions for overseas jobs that did not exist. The men recruited more than 1,100 workers from more than 10 provinces - including Anhui , Heilongjiang and Jiangsu - the Procuratorial Daily reports. More than 500 were sent abroad by an agent, but another 577 discovered they had been conned after handing over a total of 687,500 yuan.
SICHUAN
Boy held over rape of girl
Zigong police have arrested a 16-year-old boy who raped a six-year-old early this month, the Chengdu Economic Daily reports. The boy said he was angry with his parents and grandmother and committed the crime because he wanted to go to prison and not have to see his family again. His parents in Foshan , Guangdong, said they had not had the time to educate him properly.
Kids draw on 1m yuan car
Two children used stones to draw a picture on a one million yuan Mercedes-Benz parked in Nanchong on Tuesday, the Newssc.org news portal reports. The car owner found them because they also wrote their names on the vehicle. Their families paid the driver 6,000 yuan in compensation.
ZHEJIANG
Family protest son's death
The family of a 16-year-old high school student who died in a fall from a campus building on Thursday protested outside the school in Yueqing yesterday, China News Service reports. The city's police bureau promised to investigate the death. Witnesses said the boy had been taken away by a teacher about 20 minutes before he fell. They said he might have fallen when quarrelling with the teacher over allegations that he cheated on a test.
5 wrongly jailed 17 years
Five men from Xiaoshan were wrongly jailed for more than 17 years after they were tortured by the police and forced to confess to robbing and killing two taxi drivers in March and August 1995, The Beijing News reports. The truth was revealed when a suspect whose fingerprints matched those found at the scene was arrested in December. The Zhejiang Higher People's Court is now reviewing their cases.
