Hefei police have detained a couple caught making and selling knock-off liquor out of their home in a suburban part of the city, the Market Star reports. Police found that they used bed sheets to cover the windows of their home and many empty bottles were found in their yard. Police seized about 1,000 bottles of counterfeit liquor brands after being tipped off by a villager. The couple said they had produced about 300 bottles a day since last month, and the drinks were sold to nearby restaurants and food kiosks.

A former quality-inspection official in Fuyang has been sentenced to 18 years in jail after it was discovered that he had called in sick to work for the past 20 years and participated in mob-like activities with his family, Ah.anhuinews.com reports. The family registered a trade company and used it to operate their loan shark activities. They also charged local businesses "protection fees" in a downtown mall. At least 20 owners who refused to pay were beaten up by thugs. Prosecutors have taken two of the man's relatives to court for helping him run the illegal activities, but it was unclear if a verdict had been reached.
