China has called on the Indian government to ensure the safety of its nationals after a Chinese woman was allegedly raped in New Delhi.
The Chinese embassy in New Delhi said it reacted with "shock and strong anger".
Indian media reported on Thursday that a 23-year-old woman from Beijing was allegedly raped on January 30.
The woman said she met a man at a party and he invited her to his home. She reported the case to police on Tuesday, and the man is being held in custody for 14 days.
The embassy urged the Indian government to deal with the incident seriously and punish her assailant.
It also warned Chinese nationals in India, especially women, to stay alert and avoid going out alone.
Police said they were collecting evidence before sending the man to trial and would ensure the woman's safety.
Mainland internet users said Indian police and Chinese authorities should treat the case seriously, with one microblogger writing that Chinese should "go to countries that have better law and order".
"India is chaotic. Such a case should be properly solved," another microblogger wrote.
And another said: "This is very scary to women. I wouldn't go there even if someone paid for my trip."
Threats to women's safety in India have hit the headlines since the horrific gang rape on a bus in New Delhi in December that resulted in the death of the victim, a 23-year-old medical student.
