Tian Xueren abused his positions to exact millions in bribes, prosecutors say
Tian Xueren, the former deputy governor of Jilin province, has been indicted on corruption charges.
The Beijing Municipal People's Procuratorate, or prosecutors office, confirmed to the yesterday it had prosecuted Tian, 66, who was deputy governor of the northeastern province from 2004 to 2008 and later party secretary of the Bank of Jilin.
Tian was charged with taking a total of 19.2 million yuan (HK$24 million) in bribes on 85 occasions between 1995 and 2011, reported in a lengthy article.
Tian was placed under party investigation in November 2011 and was stripped of his Communist Party membership for corruption in July last year, Xinhua previously reported.
Prosecutors accused Tian of using his position to fast-track the promotions of civil servants, police and other officials in return for kickbacks, said. Five of 10 cases involved businessmen, and the others involved civil servants who were promoted after bribing Tian.
Tian accepted bribes ranging from 5,000 yuan (HK$6,200) to US$1 million (HK$7.7 million), prosecutors said. On most occasions, he accepting payments at his three apartments in Changchun or at his offices at the provincial government and headquarters of the Bank of Jilin headquarters.
