What to wear when visiting the country widely seen as Asia's fashion trendsetter?
For China's first lady, the answer was a number of outfits. Instead of a modified-cheongsam look, Peng Liyuan chose for her first outfit a cropped beige jacket with dolman sleeves on top of a aquamarine top, with a black pencil skirt, black pumps, and black clutch.
"Quite nice!" said William Tang, one of Hong Kong's best known fashion designers. "However, the jacket is too overwhelming. If the jacket and skirt were dark jade green, that would be perfect."
Several online commentators were critical of the jacket, but others said the tailoring embraced traditional Korean elements.
For her first meeting with South Korean President Park Geun-hye, Peng changed into an all-white coat on top of a white dress with a green brooch and white clutch. Park wore a tangerine-coloured coat with khaki trousers.
