Typhoon Kalmaegi made landfall in southern China’s Hainan Island on Tuesday morning and is expected to hit Guangdong province soon as local governments issued high-level emergency response alerts.

China’s National Meteorological Centre said Kalmaegi hit the city of Wenchang in the northeast of Hainan at 9.40am with gusts of up to 144km/h.

Hainan’s international airport canceled 69 flights, China's official Xinhua News Agency said.

Moving west-northwest at 30km/h, the typhoon was expected to hit the Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong province within several hours.
