A senior Guangdong official who forged the peaceful settlement of the 2011 Wukan protests and was a close aide of Vice-Premier Wang Yang is under investigation for corruption.

Zhu Mingguo, chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, was suspected of "serious violations of party discipline and law", the Communist Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said yesterday.

A source close to the provincial government said rumours first surfaced early this year that Zhu was under investigation.

"A few months passed and we thought he might be safe. We were all shocked to hear about it [yesterday]," the source said.

Zhu's last public appearance was believed to have been this week when he attended a meeting of provincial leaders, according to Guangzhou Daily's report yesterday.
