Photographs posted online of an 80-year-old Chinese man buying a diamond ring for his wife have been hailed as “the most romantic thing” by hundreds of mainland microbloggers.

Publication of the pictures sparked huge discussion on the Sina Weibo social media website, the news website ifeng.com reported.
One of photos showed the husband from Xinjiang, dressed in a dark-green jacket and a trapper hat, putting a diamond ring on the finger of his elderly wife, who wore a grey plaid coat, and a colourful scarf covering part of her face.

A Weibo user, “this is Xinjiang” – an Urumqi-based account with 550,000 followers – posted the photos of the couple on Wednesday.
To date, the post has been reposted 1,646 times and attracted 242 comments.
Many users have said that the photos are so touching that they made them want to cry. Other people blogged, “this is true love”.
“The last kilometre”, a WeChat account set up by the Xinjiang Internet Information Office, has followed up the story and yesterday interviewed staff working at the jewellery shop where the man bought the ring.
Zhou Lanlan, one member of staff at the shop, said the couple had visited their shop at about noon on Wednesday and the husband asked for a reasonably priced diamond ring.
The shop recommended one ring, which was being sold at a discount and, after trying it on, the man bought it, the WeChat account reported.
Zhou said that the husband used a huge roll of small banknotes to pay for the ring. He said that he wanted to make to his wife happy after a lifetime of struggling together.
She took their photos in the shop, hoping to inspire more young people to recognise the love and romance found in their parents’ generation.
