Jailed former Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian is expected to be released for medical treatment today after serving more than four years of a 20-year sentence for corruption.

A team under the Ministry of Justice's Agency of Corrections, which is in charge of the island's prisons and detention centres, will review an assessment made earlier by a hospital team.

The agency told the Central News Agency that a decision would be made by noon.

Supporters had hoped Chen would be released on December 31, when the hospital team unanimously recommended that he be granted medical parole because they believed his health problems could not be properly treated in prison, according to local media reports.

"These fours days are as long as four years [to our family]," his son Chen Chih-chung wrote on Facebook, adding that the family had been taking turns to visit the senior Chen.
