Celebrity model was driving rented sports car in early morning accident, sources say. A woman passenger broke her legs and was in a coma when she arrived at hospital

A former Mr Asia winner was involved in a car accident in Palau which put a Chinese woman passenger in hospital, according to sources and local media.

Zhong Hao, who won the regional modelling contest at age 25 in 2013, suffered only minor injuries, they said.

An appeal later appeared on the celebrity’s Weibo account asking for more than a half million yuan in donations to pay for a plane that would take the woman back to mainland China for further medial treatment.

It was raining when the accident occurred around 3am on Thursday on a mountain road on Babeldaob island, according to Huang Jianjun, the Chinese owner of the Palau Lighthouse Hotel who said he rented Zhong and his friend two sports cars.

The woman passenger broke both her legs in several places and suffered injuries to her neck, Huang said, adding she was in a coma when she arrived at hospital but was now in stable condition and able to speak. She was identified as Liu Jiaxin, a 20-year-old photographer working in Palau, by her alumni of the Guangzhou Vocational College of Technology and Business.
