A Chinese official assessing the risks to trade under the incoming US administration cited a Trump family video as a positive sign.
Speaking at a forum in Beijing on Saturday, Vice Finance Minister Zhu Guangyao referred to a video of Arabella Kushner, US President-elect Donald Trump’s granddaughter, reciting Chinese poetry in a performance that was shared on social media in China.

The performance, which was uploaded to the Instagram account of her mother, Ivanka, saw Arabella reciting lines from classical Tang dynasty poems in Putonghua and dressing in a traditional Chinese blouse.
The youngster’s understanding of Chinese culture underscored the strength of the ties between the two nations, Zhu said, adding that China and the US needed to keep moving forward together.

The nod towards cultural ties contrasts with tensions over Taiwan, China’s role in the South China Sea, and Trump’s campaign pledges to take action against China over what he said were its unfair advantages in trade.
Zhu said there would be no winner in a trade war between China and the US, and the damage would spill over to the rest of the world.
His comment was Beijing’s latest and most direct response to rising trade tension between the world’s two largest economies after Trump signalled a tough line in trade policy toward China.

The Sino-US relationship is facing uncertainty with Trump labelling China a currency manipulator and vowing to impose a 45 per cent tariff on imports from China to protect US interest.
The uncertainty has deepened after Trump had a telephone conversation with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on December 2, and questioned whether the one-China policy still remains valid.
Beijing warned that the one-China policy is a political foundation for Sino-US relationship, and there would be no basis for the two nations to cooperate if the policy is abandoned.
