Chinese security officer who died trying to stop suicide nominated posthumously for bravery award

A security guard who died on Sunday while trying to prevent a woman from committing suicide has been nominated posthumously for a bravery award by the company that employed him.

Li Guowu, a 43-year-old security guard, was on patrol outside a residential building in Xian, the capital of Shaanxi province, when he spotted a woman standing on a window ledge on the 11th floor.

Surveillance video shows Li, a former soldier, shouting at her not to jump and positioning himself directly beneath the window in the hope of catching her. The woman falls on him, killing both on impact, Beijing Youth Daily reported on Wednesday.

The company Li worked for has posthumously nominated him for a government award that is handed out to unusually brave citizens. The company has also offered Li’s family 5,000 yuan (US$755).
