Authorities in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong ramped up their Covid-19 controls on Sunday, with residents lining up to get tested after the city reported more infections in the outbreak that started two weeks ago.
Guangzhou, the provincial capital, is struggling to contain the spread of the Delta coronavirus variant, reporting nine new cases for Saturday to take the city’s total to 94, including 14 asymptomatic infections.

Another case was confirmed on Sunday in Wuchuan, a coastal city 400km (248 miles) from Guangzhou, with that patient having returned to Wuchuan from Guangzhou on May 31.

Of the nine new cases in Guangzhou, three are from Liwan, the city’s most seriously hit district. The six others were concentrated in one family in Nansha district, the southernmost new urban area of Guangzhou, which had not previously reported any infections in this outbreak.

Chen Bin, deputy head of the Guangzhou Health Commission, said on Sunday morning that as of Saturday, four of the city’s suburban districts – Nansha, Zengcheng, Conghua and Huadu – had started mass nucleic acid testing of all residents.
