Earthquake in eastern China destroys dozens of homes, injures 24

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake rattled eastern China early on Sunday, bringing down dozens of houses and injuring 24.

The quake, about 10km (6 miles) below the surface, struck Pingyuan county in Shandong province at 2.33am, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre.

The centre said it was the biggest quake to hit Shandong province in a decade, adding that several townships were near the epicentre. In all, 59 aftershocks had been detected by 8am.

No deaths were reported in Pingyuan on Sunday.

Pingyuan is about 345km south of Beijing.
