Chinese man arrested for watching Islamic State videos

Man said he only started watching the material because he was curious about the militant group, news website reported

A man has been arrested in eastern China for downloading and watching Islamic State videos, according to a news website report.

The man from Jinan in Shandong province is accused of breaking anti-terrorism legislation by watching the material uploaded by the Islamic militant group, People.cn reported.

Jinan police captured the 36-year-old man in a village on Thursday last week after receiving a tip-off from the public the day before, the report said.

He confessed that since February last year he had visited overseas websites to watch and download terrorist audio and videos because he found them stimulating, the article said.

He was quoted as saying he got curious about the videos after watching news items about Islamic State on television.

He was detained on the grounds of illegally possessing objects advertising terrorism and extremism. It was the first case of its kind in the city, the report said.

China introduced its first anti-terrorism legislation at the beginning of the year.
